How to measure inseam before ordering travel pants

For an online order, the most useful inseam reference is often a pair of pants whose length you already like. Measure that garment carefully, then compare it with the new product's measurement method and intended silhouette. A familiar number on a label is a starting point; the tape measure gives you the actual length you are wearing.

In this guide
  1. Gather a good reference pair and a flexible tape
  2. Measure along the inside leg seam
  3. Keep garment measurements and body measurements apart
  4. Record the length you want to repeat

Gather a good reference pair and a flexible tape

Choose pants that fit at the waist and seat, not merely a pair with a convenient hem. If you are shopping for straight-leg trousers, a similar straight-leg reference is more useful than gathered joggers or a very low-crotch style. Different shapes can place the hem differently despite matching inseam numbers.

Use a flexible measuring tape and a flat surface large enough to support the garment. Empty the pockets and smooth the legs without stretching them. If the pair has been worn heavily since washing, note that condition; you want a reference that represents the fit you normally use.

Measure along the inside leg seam

UNIQLO shows how to measure from the crotch along the inside seam to the hem, including different starting points for different crotch-seam constructions. Use the version that matches your reference pair.

  • Lay the pants flat with one leg arranged so you can follow the inner seam clearly.
  • Locate the point where the crotch and inner leg seams meet. Start the tape there.
  • Follow the inside seam down to the finished hem. Keep the tape against the seam without pulling the fabric.
  • Where the seam curves, measure in short sections along the curve instead of cutting straight across it.
  • Repeat the measurement and record the result with its unit. If necessary, check the other leg for a noticeable difference.

Keep garment measurements and body measurements apart

A product chart may give finished-garment dimensions or the body size the garment is intended to fit. UNIQLO explains the distinction. Read the chart heading and diagram before comparing your number.

If the brand requests a body measurement, use its method and the desired endpoint. A body measurement down to an ankle and a trouser measurement down to a hem are not automatically equivalent. The crotch position, rise and intended trouser length affect how the garment hangs.

Record the length you want to repeat

Put on the reference pants with your intended shoes before saving the measurement as a target. If the hem drags or exposes more ankle than you want, record the adjustment you need alongside the measured inseam. The shoe and hem guide helps with full-length, cropped and cuffed styles.

Check the selected length option on the new listing. A title may mention several inseams while the active variation offers only one of them. If no finished inseam is supplied, ask for it; model height is not a measurement of the trousers.

If only the hem is too long, investigate hemming. If the knee shaping, pockets or crotch also sit too low, use the petite fit diagnosis before choosing a shorter length.

Questions before you choose

Should I use the inseam printed on pants I own?

Measure the actual pair as well. The label may not describe its current finished length or the measurement convention used by a different brand.

Can two pants with the same inseam land differently?

Yes. Rise, crotch position, leg shape and footwear can change the apparent length. Compare similar styles and try the complete outfit.
