Should you carry a passport in your pants pocket?

Carry a passport in a pants pocket only if it fits without bending, stays comfortable while seated and can be kept dry. A zipper may help contain it, but does not make the compartment theft-proof or waterproof.

In this guide
  1. Choose one place for the document
  2. Look beyond whether it fits standing up
  3. Protect it from water and the laundry

Choose one place for the document

When you need the original with you, decide where it will stay and return it there after each document check. Repeatedly switching between pants, jacket and bag makes it easier to lose track of the passport.

Whether you need the original depends on the destination, transport and activity. Check the relevant official guidance for that question; this guide concerns the physical carrying choice.

Look beyond whether it fits standing up

Check with a card stand-in the size of your closed passport and cover. Close the pocket, then sit and walk. If the card folds sharply, protrudes or strains the closure, use another compartment. The pocket-fit guide gives the measurement method.

Keep keys, coins and other rigid items from crowding the passport. A larger pocket is not automatically more useful if you keep opening it for unrelated belongings.

PositionPractical limitation
Back pocketYou may sit on the document.
Front pocketThe document may bend around the thigh or be awkward to reach seated.
Cargo pocketExtra space can come with swinging or noticeable bulk.
Bag or document pouchCheck access and the holder’s moisture limits separately.

Protect it from water and the laundry

A water-resistant trouser finish does not establish protection through the pocket lining, seams or zipper. If you use a protective holder, check its stated limits and try the whole package in the pocket.

The U.S. State Department lists water damage, mold, stains and significant tears among examples of passport damage. Use your issuing authority’s instructions if the document appears damaged. U.S. passport damage guidance.

Empty every compartment before changing pants or handing them to a laundry service, including small inner pockets. Put the passport back in its designated carrying or storage place before dealing with the clothing.

Questions before you choose

Can a zippered pants pocket prevent pickpocketing?

No pocket can guarantee that. A closure may help keep an item contained, but location, access and your handling routine still matter. Avoid treating “hidden” or “security” as a theft-proof promise.

Should I fold my passport to fit a smaller pocket?

Choose a larger compartment or another carrying method instead of forcing the document to fit. Check the issuing authority’s guidance if the passport already appears damaged.
