Read the composition and the care label separately
The composition label tells you what fibers are present. The care label tells you which cleaning treatments the finished pants permit. A small elastane percentage does not give you a safe dryer setting, and a large percentage does not prove that hand washing is required. Keep those two questions separate.
Photograph the label before traveling, including instructions for bleach, softener, drying and ironing. Use the stated wash program and detergent, and keep exposed hooks or other snagging hardware away from the fabric. For hand washing, follow the sink-washing procedure within those limits.
Check before adding softener or dryer sheets
Patagonia's product-care guidance discourages softeners and dryer sheets for its gear, describing potential interference with performance fabrics and spandex longevity. Treat that as a reason to check your own maker's instructions, not as proof that every brand has identical requirements. Patagonia product care.
Pass any restriction to a laundry service explicitly. Do not assume the staff will infer it from the word stretch or from how the fabric feels.
Treat drying and pressing as separate decisions
A permitted machine wash does not automatically mean a permitted tumble dry. Read the drying instruction explicitly. If line or flat drying is required, arrange the pants without twisting or loading the wet waistband with unnecessary weight. If tumble drying is allowed, use the specified conditions and remove the garment as instructed.
Check ironing permission independently too. GINETEX ties ironing treatment to the garment label, including limits that can concern heat and steam. GINETEX care symbols. Do not use a hotter setting to force out a stubborn knee crease or to deliberately shrink a waistband.
If the waistband or knees change shape
If the knees bag out, the waistband loosens or the surface ripples, compare the fully dry garment with how it fitted before. Note whether the change followed a particular wash, drying cycle or period of wear. Several causes can look similar, so avoid diagnosing failed elastane from appearance alone.
Check for a stretched seam, damaged elastic or a local repair issue. A maker or tailor may be able to assess the construction. Repeatedly applying hotter washes or dryer cycles is not a controlled way to restore the original dimensions.
A change confined to the waistband may need a different repair from loose knees or a damaged seam. Ask the maker or a tailor to assess the affected area; hotter wash and dryer cycles are not a controlled repair.

Questions before you choose
Can stretch travel pants go in the dryer?
Some can and some cannot. Follow the drying instruction on the exact garment, including any temperature limit; the fiber percentage alone is insufficient.
Will hot water make stretched-out pants fit again?
It is not a dependable repair. Heat can change parts of the garment unpredictably. Follow the care label and ask the maker or a repair professional about persistent shape changes.
